Marc Marquez turned Saturday morning's pole heartbreak into Saturday afternoon's Sprint triumph, reeling in home hero Marco Bezzecchi to claim his sixth Sprint win of the season and cut championship leader Jorge Martin's advantage down to just 14 points at the Red Bull Grand Prix of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera 2026.

Racing in dry conditions at Misano, Marquez went from pole-position runner-up to race winner in the space of a few hours — avenging Bezzecchi's stunning 1'29.982 pole lap, a time that also stands as the fastest ever recorded around the circuit in 2026.

With the race starting at 15:01 local time following the warm-up lap, Marquez wasted no time asserting himself, seizing the holeshot into Turn 1 from second on the grid and holding off immediate pressure from Bezzecchi to lead across the line at the end of Lap 1. Fabio Di Giannantonio made a strong getaway from fourth on the grid, while championship leader Jorge Martin — starting fifth — was also up to fourth in the early running.

What followed echoed scenes from 2025, with Marquez and Bezzecchi trading personal-best laps time and again, though the Ducati man gradually began to edge clear of the Italian in front of his home crowd.

The battle for position further down the order turned feisty early on, as front-row starter Fermin Aldeguer clashed wheel-to-wheel with title contender Pedro Acosta, the pair trading paint from Turn 2 through to Turn 6 before coming together again at Turn 10. Aldeguer came off worse, shipping places to teammate Alex Marquez, Acosta, and Raul Fernandez in the process.

Race control had a busy afternoon policing track limits, issuing warnings to Franco Morbidelli, Alex Marquez, Alex Rins, Fermin Aldeguer, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Francesco Bagnaia, Brad Binder, Enea Bastianini, Joan Mir, Diogo Moreira, Raul Fernandez, and Toprak Razgatlioglu across the 13 laps. Razgatlioglu was the only rider to pay a price, handed a one-position penalty for exceeding the limits on the final lap.

There was also a scare for Fabio Quartararo, who crashed out attempting to pass Moreira at Turn 14 in the opening laps. The Frenchman was confirmed unhurt and swiftly rejoined the race, eventually salvaging 21st.

Marquez continued to set the pace up front, a 1'30.763s lap stretching his advantage over Bezzecchi to more than a second at the midpoint of the Sprint. Bezzecchi hit back with a 1'30.846 on Lap 6 but still couldn't find an answer to the Marc. Behind them, Martin — managing his championship cushion — held station in third.

With five laps remaining, Bezzecchi had clawed the gap back down to half a second while still lapping in the 1'30s, as Marquez briefly slipped into the 1'31s. A lap later, Marquez returned to the 1'30s, but the margin held firm at around half a second heading into the closing stages.

The decisive moment arrived with two laps to go, as Marquez fired in the fastest lap of the Sprint — a 1'30.734 on Lap 11 at 167.6 km/h — to finally break free of Bezzecchi's grasp. Making amends for last year's Sprint error at this very venue, Marquez completed a lights-to-flag victory.

Bezzecchi settled for second, 1.068s adrift — his first top-two Sprint finish of the season — with Martin completing an all-Aprilia share of the podium in third, 3.538s behind the winner. Di Giannantonio was fourth (+3.968s), just half a second off the rostrum, ahead of Alex Marquez in fifth (+4.348s).
